Re: Favourite tank of World War Two?

I heard that some Tigers didn't have much mobility cause they'd roll onto the bridge and it would collapse  :o

Collapsing bridges are the reason why germanys heavy tanks were able to cross rivers by diving ;)

Even PzIIIs would take down small bridges in russia. part of the rcce platoons job was surveying them. @ LordRommal: How effective do you think the snorkelling devices and such really were on the Panzers?

Re: Favourite tank of World War Two?

Well. The snorkelling was possible. Technical stuff worked quiet perfect.
In combat; Well. Wasnt used quiet often. Didnt no any report of an Tiger that crossed a river by snorkelling.
But german engineers know that brigdes wont be strong enough for this german heavy tanks.

All in all everyone had this problem with brigdes. So i think this point cancel each other out and cant be a factor
for combat mobility  :)

Re: Favourite tank of World War Two?

I heard that there were actually some PanzerIII's that were upgraded to "Tauchpanzer" for the Operation Seelion. I think I could pass about 15m deep rivers. Dunno if it was used.

Re: Favourite tank of World War Two?

Hm. I'm not at home so i cant look into my books but i can remember that there were around 70 Panzer III and IV of a special "Tauchversion" (dive version) for the Operation Seelöwe against England. They were able to dive in round about 5m deep. With the abandon of Seelöwe this dive tanks were assign to the 18. Panzer-Division that used this tank quiet often in Russia with great succes.
A number of Panzer III crossed the river Bug and destroyed a number of heavy soviet field artilleries and allowed the infantry of the 18. PzDiv to cross the Bug without casualties.

Just when I thought the Germans had it all, they have below sea level tanks xD

Re: Favourite tank of World War Two?

If favorite tank includes Tank Destroyers and SPG's mine would be the SU-100 or Jagdpanther. MBT-wise either the T-34/85 or the Panther.

The Panzer IV will always be a favorite. The real unsung hero of the German war effort.
