Actually, this is like revive the dead/create Frankenstein's monster/make zombie :P
I don't know the specific best special force but I know the one adept with explosive is the best. Image a potato-shaped C4 with time denator being tossed to the enemy, it ignores nearly everything and always cause dead. Move cover2cover, supressing fire, flanking? You're complicated noob, watch me toss something funny and then we can have some beers soon.
PS: forget about suicide bombers, it's a different story. We fight so we can live(fight) another day not to die with it.

Re: who the best special force/elites?

There are so many special ops groups out there it's hard to point to one indefinitely. Operation Gladio is decent on the minor scale there.

Re: who the best special force/elites?

WW2

My vote goes for the "Fallschirmjägers" Just look at the Skorzeny group who rescued Mussolini or the Storm Group Koch that took Eben Emael,
85 men took a fortress from around 1000 men = pwnage.

Nowdays

Definately DeltaForce!!
Theyre requirements are so tough and you can't fail any of the test. Because they get so many recruits and exam them individually very carefull, they end up with some of the best boys for the job.
This is the elite of the elite.

From what I know, the Fallschirmjagers were well trained but their supplies and weapons were scattered everywhere and the weapons themselves sometimes fell into enemy hands since they were paradropped in boxes. Thus the need for FG42s. But later they became defensive troops who dominated the battle field.

They try to capture Winston Churchill. There's some decent fight scenes for the time and Michael Caine is epic.

Re: who the best special force/elites?

FSJ were some of the best armed-- an average US infantry company (200 men) would have 9 BARs and 2 .30 caliber MGs for it's mobile automatic firepower. It's German FSJ contemporary of about 160 men would be armed with no less then 40 MP40s or MP44s, and anywhere from 10-20 MG42s/MG34s, in addition to G43s and FG42s.

Motivation wise, Rangers take the cake. They went through some rough stuff to get as good as they did, and a Ranger battalion numbered around 200 men--the typical size of an average company (3 companies +a heavy weapons, engineering, or support company= 1 battalion).

For overall impact? The SAS, LRDG, or SOE. They sabatoged the allies' way to victory.

Re: who the best special force/elites?

my vote for the best SF/Elite units has to go either for JTF2 or The Devils Brigade (predecessor unit to modern JTF2).

Can you explain what JTF2 stands for?

Re: who the best special force/elites?

very true that the SEALS are world class but as opposed to many other special forces units in the world such as GRU, SBS and many others the SEALS get more radio play as it were so people hear about them more same thing goes for the CIA. Due to the amount of radio play the CIA gets in popular media people think that they are the major spy agency in the US when in fact the largest is the DIA (defense intelligence agency)

Re: who the best special force/elites?

Well this one is a difficult question to answer. There are many possibilities for this question. I know the marines are not special forces but they are quite good at what they do. Take Iwo Jima for instance there were 22000 Japanese there and only 200 lived for thats 20000 Japanese deaths and only 6800 marines died.

Then if were talking modern or right after ww2 then i might have to go with the Israeli Commandos. They are some of the best trained and
very capable of taking on spetznaz or any other special force. The FSJ are good aswell.

Then this is more of a generalization i say Snipers are pretty elite if you're a good enough sniper the only thing that beats you is counter-sniper. If you don't believe me on that then think of the Snipers of Stalingrad. or who i see as the best Sniper in history Simo Hayha.
A Finnish sniper who killed 705 Soviet soldiers in The Winter War(1940)

Re: who the best special force/elites?

A rather obscure special forces/elite unit that fought in the eastern front was the Italian Bersaglieri.  This was a corps of elite light infantry regiments that fought with the Italian 8th army until it was virtually destroyed by the Dom River during the battle of Stalingrad in 1943.  The Italian's played a surprisingly large role in the early years of the this conflict and I find them interesting because they don't get very much attention.

Re: who the best special force/elites?

I cannot recall it quite clearly now, but the Red Army had special unit of engineers trained in destroying enemy hard points. They were armed with body armor, explosives, flamethrowers and shitload of captured panzerfausts (they were using more than 100 a day).
