[Finished] Freedom Square (2)

[Finished] Freedom Square (2)

Again, as already explained in Kharkov (2), I had plenty of opportunity to let flow my creative juices (that sounded better in my head). So, here is the plan for the second map I have in mind for Kharkov, Freedom Square.

Please forget the label "Victory Square"! I had no resources with me and mistook it for a square in Moscow.

Anyways!

So as usual, anything to add?

Re: [Plan] Freedom Square (2)

Again, excellent looking plan! I like the VP placement here better.

Re: [Plan] Freedom Square (2)

Looks like its based on historical photos or something. Did you use some? Otherwise looks great.

Yeah, it's based on the original square, or what parts of it I could recall from memory. There are a good few photo's of soviets in the square, actually... I'll have to find them again.

Re: [Plan] Freedom Square (2)

This map looks awesome! I can't wait to play it(Hopefully if you make it) If you ever need a beta tester(like we did on prague) Just let me know

Oh, it'll definitely get made! For those who know where else Kharkov is appearing *wink wink* will see an ulterior motive to my making this map.

Good job I have a working stamp tool!

I just wish I'd made an appearance earlier! I could have helped out years ago!

Re: [WIP] Freedom Square (2)

So here we are, after a good 8 hours of planning and building, we have the first, emerging stages of Kharkov's Freedom Square.

Forum post image

To state from the off, there is considerable difference in the buildings at the "crown" of the square to reality, but after a wee talk with Maxi we, thought it better to have functioning, strategically viable buildings rather than real-to-life vis-only buildings.
And besides that, I now have to think of something interesting to break up the massive carpet of negative terrain down the centre of the map!

Craters, barricades, emplaments, wrecks (!), a market, walls, trenches, other debris.. there's a lot ;)

Re: [WIP] Freedom Square (2)

Oh don't worry about that! Although looking through some of the old pictures (which battle for the city they were taking during however eludes me) the square is eerily empty. There's barely a thing on it, as if it were just abandoned. Still, in terms of gameplay, this just won't do!

And pardon my language, but too fucking right. Bloody wrecks...

Re: [WIP] Freedom Square (2)

Correct. The map you create displays the third battle of Kharkov, maybe that helps you.
Don't worry about the square itself, fill it with whatever you think is appropriate! Because: Gameplay > historical correctness

Actually this didn't refer to Kummersdorf, but to the medal objective of the campaign map.. :P

Re: [WIP] Freedom Square (2)

I must have Kummersdorf on my mind... Go figure.

And I forgot about that objective! So, you're thinking that this map is set after the campaign mission, huh?

Could be! Would give an explanation for the high amount of T-34-wrecks :P

On that thought, I take it that it'll be a long while before we get Ostheer wrecks?

Re: [WIP] Freedom Square (2)

And once again, here we are!

With the exception of the atmosphere settings, Freedom Square is done!

This has been a very enjoyable project, especially with it being part of the up and coming Kharkov campaign map. It is a taster of things to come!

Anyways, here are a few shots:

Re: [Finished] Freedom Square (2)

My Official Review of Freedom Square(2)

After extensively testing it(20+ times now). I can say that this map is built very well. When moving troops through the more condensed top section of the map it just feels right. They move through without getting stopped by rubble. It makes for really fun engagements, with lots of cover and buildings to garrison in. The middle area is crafted insanely well. It can be easy or hard to attack/defend. But with the right defenses it can be held or with the right attack force easily taken(Ask Bacon about Soviet Blob). The lower portion of the map is still really well made. It had less buildings than the upper section, but it still just feels...right. There is good cover and also makes for fun engagements. It's safe to say that Bacon knows what he is doing and is a very talented mapper. I highly suggest that this map make it into the next "map pack"

Re: [Finished] Freedom Square (2)

Thanks!

I have to say that I've been surprised by this map myself! When you're building, you have a good idea of what you'd like to happen, but in truth you have very little power over how well some areas play. The fact that I've beaten this map in 15 minutes, and then using the same strategies it has taken over an hour, it shows me that this map has a little something in it that I didn't intend to make, and it certainly makes it more interesting!

I'm hoping that you'll all see what I mean soon!
