Tech Problem With Keystrokes

OK, it isn't strictly Eastern Front but it is still affecting it, and I figured that we have a pretty good knowledge pool here.

I am using my dad's new Vista Quadcore to run all my games, but every single one of them suffers from a certain keystroke lag.

No matter what settings I run them on, the same problem persists; it takes a few tries before keystrokes are recognised, and if you hold them down at all, the game assumes it is still being pressed for some time after I let go (it appears the longer I hold, the longer it lags afterwards).

The same problem does not exist with other software. Internet Explorer works as it should, so does notepad.

I can play RTS's fine, because the mouse doesn't lag in the slightest, but it makes action games nigh unplayable.

I have tried running games in low and high priority, I have tried running them windowed and I have tried a different keyboard. I have even closed down a variety of background processes, but no luck.

Any ideas?

Nope, but I've got a similar problem with sprinting in fps's using an intel q9something quad core processor

What kind of keyboard is it and who makes it? Wired or wireless?

Wired Dell which came supplied with the computer.

Same happens with other keyboards plugged in.

Wireless which we have put fresh batteries in very often.

Try disabling things like: StickyKeys, FilterKeys, and ToggleKeys. You may also want to look at the priority for your games in Task Manager. Disable some background programs (like FRAPS), and try running games in DX9 mode and see if it helps.

Tried Stickykeys, will try Filter and Toggle.

As I said in first post, priority makes no difference and neither does lowering graphical settings to the lowest possible.

Tried disabling those - problem remains. Any further ideas?

OEMs will typically load up new computers with a lot of junk. Try using PC Decrapifier, and disabling some background programs.

On the subject of clearing shit up.

CCleaner, awesome program (just don't forget to untick the Cookies bit - so you don't have to remember all your passwords again).

I use CCleaner.

The problem got sorted about a week ago but I don't know how. Then it came back for a day, and now its normal again.
