OBR 76mm, what do you guys think?

Us devs would like to get an opinion on what the community thinks about the OBR. right now we have noticed that it is barely used, which tells us something is wrong.

so please tell us what you think about this unit, and if you want it to be changed or replaced, please say with what or how

Re: OBR 76mm, what do you guys think?

I didn't use it because don't know how to use it or how effective it is. I used on some bridge maps but it shouldn't be counted, didn't it? :P
No vote.

Edit: When I play bridge maps, I play against CPU :P (for testing new stuffs or raising morale). But I will try OBR in near future, some trainning matches maybe.
I'm drunk now, I'm outranked you in philosophy.

Depends if you play against CPU, even a bridge map can be tricky with real enemies.

Re: OBR 76mm, what do you guys think?

It's not supposed to be entirely defensive, unlike the name "Emplacement" presents itself.

The OBR should be used in an aggressive role. By building it near the front line, you can buff out Paks, weapon crews, bunkers, FHQs, etc. You should use it to bombard the enemy defenses and infantry in heavy cover.

Re: OBR 76mm, what do you guys think?

The only thing I like about the OBR is it's passive fire role. You build it once and you don't really have to care about it anymore. Basicly like a strong mortar.

Obr is a defensive weapon, once build you can´t move it anymore. Its meant to defend a point against waves of infantry backed up by a mg nest. However you can use a defensive weapon offensively too. If your attack fails the gun will be lost.

Re: OBR 76mm, what do you guys think?

Is the OBR only capable of killing infantry?

No it can kill anything but its effectivness against vehicles is very low.

Re: OBR 76mm, what do you guys think?

Not at all. BOFORs are limited to point-defense. An OBR can barrage a Wehr camping position from range to take out weapon crews and bunkers very effectively. It is very much like the mortar pit in purpose but ingame it is much better for countering moving blobs and light vehicles than mortars are.

OBR should be getting some tweaks next patch to make it easier to build.
If you get into an argument with me, you're wrong.

Re: OBR 76mm, what do you guys think?

OBR is a infantry raping gun. Backed up by a mgnest axis has low chance to counter it. They need vehicles, artillery or atguns. Its very powerful in combination with the Notonestepback ability.

Re: OBR 76mm, what do you guys think?

I tryed it in 1o1s 500vps vs  a good Player
Its useless, if it would be moveabel like a morter it would be great
Send me a PM and we can play 1o1 500VPs!

Re: OBR 76mm, what do you guys think?

IMO its actually really strong at picking away at infantry and PAKs.  Sometimes I wonder if Dennis just buffs himself to counter my T2 Terror  :D  I played against it in its current stage.  It has the range of a Flak 88, but instead of being good against tanks, its good against infantry.  I don't see how its useless at all.  In fact, the range on that thing is ridiculous.  It really creates a huge "no-mans land" for T2 units...

Re: OBR 76mm, what do you guys think?

Voted to keep it. Backed up with a Mgnest it can provide very good area coverage. If you wanna protect a VP or high resource point or Post, it's pretty reliable. I don't see any reason to remove it. "I don't use it let's remove" is not a valid reason.

Exactly my thinking. Does every US player use Demo Charges, even though they're useful at what they do?

Indeed. I think we may have to adjust the stats of it, particularly the range as you said.

Re: OBR 76mm, what do you guys think?

I've tested once again today, it doesn't have a Flak-88 range btw. Slightly smaller circle. But I'm talking about the Sandbox version.

This wasnt good example Cranial :)

I didnt used OBR. I was thinking to use it , but its small range (for me and for the game ot villers bocage) stoped me.

No, I feel it was a fair enough example. The OBR is plenty useful but it's not used in so much of normal gameplay due to hit or miss use. Just like a US player does not normally tech for Demo Charges. A US player may not always use demo charges to blow up bunkers, just like a soviet player may not always use the OBR to kill bunkers.

Same with Flak 88. Do you see it in every game that includes defensive doctrine? The answer is no.

The emplacement has slightly smaller range than a Flak 88. It's range is probably a contributing factor for it's awesomeness. I don't know if you put it near a shot blocker but things are being tweaked to adjust this, to adjust it's firing angles.

Re: OBR 76mm, what do you guys think?

the gun has to be targeted into the right direction. It doesnt autorotate.

Which is one of it's few flaws, the largest being its face360 and the 2nd being it's unreliability at close range.

Re: OBR 76mm, what do you guys think?

I play often with OBR and i like the design of this.
I used it like Cranialwizard said, relatively offensive near the front line and i think it works.

Re: OBR 76mm, what do you guys think?

I Almost only play against AI so i wont talk that about balance and stuff. I like the 76mm cannon, its like a super mortar ;D(dug in that is)
The sound it makes when firing is also good,as is the impact sounds(along with a nice explosion).

But i get some problems with the model, it looks kinda inside out if you know what i mean, don't know if this is just for me or for others as well ???

I agree about the design, looks "weak" without sandbags etc. It should be redesigned something like Bofors imho.

What i meant is that the barrel of the cannon looks strange, if you zoom in and look at it ingame i think you will see it. You can see the inside of the barrel, but not in through the muzzle but through the barrel itself.

Re: OBR 76mm, what do you guys think?

It's a very decent gun, works well when backed up by MG nests & AT guns and also as some have mentioned, it can be effective bombarding the enemy's camp point. However, as it's on the RHS of propoganda doctrine (the much lesser picked of the sides), it's usually not until late game when you see it, by which time it struggles a bit holding off vet 3 Grens and KCH, not to mention panthers. I do believe it should be kept, as it's very unique, just I agree it does need to become easier to obtain, as you very rarely see one.

Yes, that's a problem with the normals on the barrel, it's an easy fix and would have been fixed a long time ago if the 3DsMax RGM importer plugin didn't have problems importing the model.

Re: OBR 76mm, what do you guys think?

I dunno. It just doesn't do anything too well if you ask me. I'd much rather take another squad of navals or a light tank instead of it.

Re: OBR 76mm, what do you guys think?

I don't mind the little OBR... I would use much more if it were easier to 'unlock'... It really is like a brit mortar pit but better (not really a fan of mortars in general, though I always have *some*). Voted to keep (with adjustments).

A favored tactic of mine (against AI at least) is to build up a strong point around an Outpost (for re-enforcing), An MG nest out on each 'flank' (of the position anyway, with fire-arcs overlapping). Put an OBR near the Outpost at the center of the position, put sandbag walls between everything, and then park the medic truck behind the whole lot (but close enough to heal emplacement crews). I'll occasionally put an Arty fire-base back a little further again, but that depends on the location...

I use this tactic to create 'access denial' zones to hold important areas of the map without having to dedicate infantry and/or tanks to it, freeing up that stuff to flank the enemy, raid their positions/base, etc...

LOL!!

But seriously, I actually agree... But I have found that it (the whole position) at least is able to hold out long enough for me to bring in something else to deal with said panther... Of course, my ULTIMATE preference is to be the one *using* the panther :P

voted to keep. decent arty/whateveritis and really good for locking down areas on large maps.

Re: OBR 76mm, what do you guys think?

The area of fire isn't that large. I would say its at most firefly/panther range. IMO its only good for holding a VP. It can kill infantry relatively but its like a MG dugout. Once u know its there u will avoid it
