Ostheer: upgrading tanks

i just had the idea of "upgrading" the tanks.

example:
you can build a panther version D (1. version) that is prone to getting immobilized or motor damage when getting hit and drives slower than the wehrmacht version.

but in the tank yard you have the option of upgrading your panthers to version A (2. version) and later version G (final version). version A would mean the panther is no longer prone to that (see above) and is a bit faster. version G would add some armor and side skirts.

the first versions would be buildable sooner and be much cheaper, but also weaker.
so you can choose to either rush into battle with  damage-prone tanks or spend more ressources and time to get the better versions.

the same could be done with PzII, PzIII, PzIV and StuGs

upgrades would only take effect to tanks built after purchasing the upgrade, but existing tanks could be upgraded individually for higher costs.

Panther
D: slower, treads break easily
A: faster, treads don't break easily, greater LOS
G: better armor

PzIV
A: 75mm stubby
F: better armor
G: 75mm long barrel gun, skirts
H: better armor, zimmerit

PzIII
A: 37mm
E: faster, better armor
G: 50mm
J: better armor, better gun
M: skirts

PzII
A: MG+20mm
E: faster, better gun

StuGIII
A: 75mm
F: better gun
G: skirts

Re: Ostheer: upgrading tanks

When I got now a Panther D and I take the research ( If I realy understand u right) so I can call-in now Panther A's, do the privios Panther D get the upgrade too? Or will they still be a Panther D and only the next, called-in Panther becomes then Version A?

Re: Ostheer: upgrading tanks

this sounds nice and it gives the germans that early tank advantage they had in the early war on the eastern front

Re: Ostheer: upgrading tanks

Mmm hmm indeed it is a good idea.

I think it would be better if everything had say, three upgrades. The first kind of removing the weaknesses of the tank, the second and third either improving defense (armour skirts) line of sight (commander) or offense (mg gunner).

Cheers

Re: Ostheer: upgrading tanks

also they could change the look of the stug so i looks like what it does in the newsreels. and what about the the pz 1?  :) lol amazingly they were still in service till 1942-43 lol. but thats a great idea!

Re: Ostheer: upgrading tanks

This would allow for a very high and unique level of customization. Perfect.

Re: Ostheer: upgrading tanks

Wouldn´t it be better if this was applied to the Panzer IV instead of the Panther? And make it so that early PIVs are the IST variety, then after the upgrade you can also build regular PIVs.

Re: Ostheer: upgrading tanks

so it's sort of like the wermacht upgrade system with paid vet, but it works on individual tanks?

Re: Ostheer: upgrading tanks

Yeah pretty much, its not so much a Vet system (as it leaves infantry out entirely) but an alternate way of improving your tanks capabilities.
