Soviet Observation Team? (And more)

Strategy and Tactics for Soviets

Soviet Observation Team? (And more)

What is the reason for choosing the observation upgrade on snipers? It seems like it only gives you artillery and longer line of sight.

Is there any tactics or strategies that you have tried that involved using observation team and where it is a key for success?

Observation teams seems to be unable to go into stealth leaving them very wounderble on when placed to watch an area.

What is the purpose of this unit, why is it in the game, what does it counter or help take down?

:)

Quick Questions:
Does the observation team see stealthed enemy units like snipers?
How does mark target reveal units, how long does it reveal them and are there any tactics where this ability is key?

I ask because i want to have a good use for every unit when needed :)

Re: Soviet Observation Team?

The O.T. is very good in conjunction with a sniper
the O.T. marks the enemy snipers and they cant cloak anymore, then you just snipe them out

Ah, nice. ;D i'll try that.

Re: Soviet Observation Team?

O.T is one of the most efficient units SU has.

1. Use them as spotters for snipers.
2. Use them as arty spotters - firebases, mortars, Katyushas, and ISU have better accuracy when target is visible.
3. Drop arty on heads of your enemies only for 100 munitions today!
4. Spot targets for AT guns.
5. Make them overall recon unit - sneak behinf enemy base, hide and watch what he has. And if yoy force large blob back to HQ, well... you have arty, you know what to do :)

Re: Soviet Observation Team?

soviets don't pay munitions for most of their abilities and if you've already spent what upgrades you want , any extra munitions are usually spent on IL2 runs or GOW, however should the map be unsuitable or your opponent too clever for these to be effective, soviet observation team artillery is a useful tool to have in a tight spot.

or as suggested already for observation and countersniping roles.

Re: Soviet Observation Team?

Just found out that the 'Spot Target' ability debuffs enemy infantry squads so they move slower. I also noticed that it did not slow tanks, only reveal.

What is SU's stealth detector? Is that the O.T? That would be handy!

Re: Soviet Observation Team?

^^ I know the Command squad detects stealth.

Re: Soviet Observation Team?

With the observe ability or is it passive?  ??? So the command squad is the detector since it's Tier 1?

What is the global bonus that the commandsquad gives with Def and Off vet?

Why is it so hard to get the Tank Hunters to stealth? Sometimes one of the squadmembers refuse to go into cover and thus you can't choose hold fire and the whole squad get seen and the Puma goes a different way. Why not make the Tank Hunters stealth be a turned on ability like the Brittish PIAT. So if the SQUAD is said to be in cover you can click it on and chose hold fire before they shoot on stuff and mess up your ambush.  :-\

How does GOD OF WAR really work? It seems like it targets tanks inside the bombardment area.

Re: Soviet Observation Team? (And more)

Mark Target is not effective against vehicles, (in vCoH anyway).

I think the artillery strike call-in for O.T.s needs reconsideration. It is a very powerful strike and the muni cost for it is acceptable as such. The availability of "spare" muni's to use it however is a problem. For a few pennies more I can obtain two snipers or a firebase which will provide most of the O.T. abilities at a lower use cost.

What is the muni-maintenance cost for snipers and O.T.s in v1.5.01?

Does the O.T. actually have a stealth function. I have not observed it since the patch. If so How is it activated? - This is probably a case of my own ignorance. I have not really had the opportunity to play EF much since the 1.5.01 patch.

god of war ability is a blanket artillery bombardment of a very large area for a minute or so. don't think it targets anything really, just random arty.

Re: Soviet Observation Team? (And more)

The initial GOW barrage hits the ground around the area you selected, then the aftershock shots come down on units which cross the targeted area, just like PE sector arty in a way. Please correct me if I am wrong though.

Yes, but it's passive cammo, like the sharpshooter has and the old sniper team used to.

Thats what i thought, cus it allways hit tanks inside the area destroying them if they stayed inside the range! :)
Really cool artillery strike!

(Btw, i saw an old discussion about the cheeper reinforce costs pr upgrade for conscripts. I for one think it's much cooler than normal vet. It's new and special :) )

Re: Soviet Observation Team? (And more)

In the next patch can you make the O.T. have the ability to holf fire. I was using it and I couldn't really get it to stop and stealth. Maybe I wasn't paying attention (I was trying them out, not really using them effectively :P) but I dont think there is a hold fire button ???

Re: Soviet Observation Team? (And more)

You can but they gotta be stealthed, aka in cover first. After they stealth you can choose hold fire. Just like Tank Hunters.

Maby they should be able to stealth before they are hidden so they won't shoot instead of going stealth.

Anybody got any replys about the Tank Hunter issue? It must be something the devs have overlooked right?

Which tank hunter issue? I think you are looking in the wrong thread.

Re: Soviet Observation Team? (And more)

The issue is... It's friggin hard to get them to cloak.. And i mean all 4 of the squadmembers. When you put a squad in cover sometimes afjew members will stand behind the rest of the squad and so right?

Well the squad member that is furthest away from the cover, yellow or green will not be cloaked and you can't use hold fire then.

So when i see a puma comming i am quick to hide my tank hunters just to get them slaughtered because one or even two squadmembers in both squads refused to cloak.

I think the whole squad should cloak if it is considered as covered. (Yellow\Green shield) and not depend on all squadmembers staying in perfect possition. (Like the brittish PIATS)

(And this is the thread where i asked if it is supposed to be that way, one of the first posts)
(Not an issue if the squad is down to one man or even two.)

Re: Soviet Observation Team? (And more)

You posted the same in the know bugs & issues and the answer is the same: there is no issue, it works the same in CoH. Try to not hijack threads ;).

However cephalos suggested something good (IIRC was him :-X).

Maby the O.T should get the ability to hold fire even though it's not cloaked so it does not give away it's possition so easily before it's stealthed? :D
