Remote Hetzer MG

Has anybody noticed that Hetzers used an MG that isn't manned by anybody? Did the Germans really figure out how to make remote control weapons by 1944? I can't see how a weapon like that can work without technology from the past two decades.

Re: Remote Hetzer MG

THe 38T series had ball mounted MGs. It is unlikely that the co-axial mount was locked into the main gun, but maybe. The Drivers MG could be fired "remotely" -while driving, low accuracy that way.

Re: Remote Hetzer MG

It was able to be used by the commander with the help of a periscope and an extended trigger. So it wasn't remote controlled but operated from the safe inside.

Re: Remote Hetzer MG

What was the ammo capacity and rate of fire? And was this system used on any tanks other than the Hetzer?

Also, why don't people use these in modern times? It's obviously much safer than sticking your head out...

Re: Remote Hetzer MG

I saw that StuG III, StuG IV and Jagdpanzer IV had also "remote MG". In game it works "perfect". In real life... I think that it's only scared infantry for that they didn't come closer to tank. And MG looks like it could not be lifted up and down, so perhaps this accuracy was very low. I'm not an expert, so i could be wrong in this thing.

They using it. For example tank Abrams, Merkava.

Re: Remote Hetzer MG

It would be an mg34 firing the 7.92 round. With about 800-900 rounds per minute?
However I have read that those were loaded with ammo drums with 50 rounds. However it did exist ammo drums with 75 rounds that were modifyed.

And I Think this werent so effective. You had hard time aiming with them . You only had a little periscope :3

Re: Remote Hetzer MG

In C.O.H. the periscope only offers a sight and range increase; The M.G. still operates without it. Wouldn't it make more sense then if the upgrade activated the secondary gun?

Re: Remote Hetzer MG

Hehe yeah actually it would ^^ However, most tank mgs in COH sucks big time and are most for looks XD

Imagine a COH with realistic tank MGs.. AT infantry would have a hard time getting close to your tanks.. :P

Hetzer carried 1200 rounds for secondary armament. Didn't the MG34 use cloth ammo belts for AFV use?

The Goliath is remote controlled. Anyone know how?
If you get into an argument with me, you're wrong.
#80576

Re: Remote Hetzer MG

It was controlled by command cables. You cut the cables you have a box filled with high explosives sitting pretty in the middle of a firefight.

You use your hands to control the remote to control the Goliath. ::) :P ;D

Re: Remote Hetzer MG

And like you surely understands. In COH there are no command cables. Its like a super RC car ^^

At first it was radio controlled but when it drove out of range the radio man needed to get out of cover. Then Germans made a cheaper, more realiable solution with a cable.

RE:Hetzer MG.  Ha ha ha, has anyone noticed how accurate CoH makes the MG 42, he cant even aim it but gets your infantry in the first burst, every burst!

Re: Remote Hetzer MG

About your radio control number:
German army had tried much more stuff ;)

E.g. they had tried to install video cameras and transfer this datas by radio at a control station.
They had tried to radio control Bogward Ladungsträger over a distance of 5.000m.
German army was very interested into radio controlled weapons.
May the force be with you.

Re: Remote Hetzer MG

Where i come from (Bayreuth; the wagner city you know) scientists were researching a bomb that exploded when reaching a special air pressure above ground.
#81776

Re: Remote Hetzer MG

Yeah isn't that just an airburst munition, like CW overwatch?
If you get into an argument with me, you're wrong.
#81783

Re: Remote Hetzer MG

No. The bombs were dropped by planes and you could exactly set the altitude when it should explode. CW overwatch thingy is fired by a gun (i think)
#81804

Re: Remote Hetzer MG

The height at which the an airburst weapon is detonated will greatly influence its yield and destructive pattern. THe Little Boy "Uranium" type bomb was detonated IIRC 1900 ft. Later testing showed than was the optimal elevation for maximum destruction.

Similarly the high rate of fire for the MG42 was effective because it placed the greatest density of metal ("cone of penetration"), on the target in the shortest time. It seldom was fired at a greater rate than ~150 rpm or 5-7 rounds per burst.

Yes but same mechanism is it? Both detonate under a certain pressure? Or is the overwatch type airburst shell set on a timer?
If you get into an argument with me, you're wrong.

Re: Remote Hetzer MG

if i remember right overwatch barrages used a timed fuze, and later a proximity fuse which used radar to help tell how far it was above the ground
