Help with the mission Trun: Swatting Flies

In the Falaise Pocket campaign mission 1, I have so much difficulty defending Oberst's Panzers. It's so difficult. There's just too many Allied soldiers getting at me. What defenses should I set up? I do construct Flak 36s, but they get overrun.

You can't have enough stuff to prevent it in that mission.

I wish that wasn't true. It's way too difficult. The best I got was 8 tanks were not destroyed.

It's been so long since i played it, but i think that's the mission with cheap 88s isn't it? If it is, you just have to build as many of them as possible, and in the best places possible. I would have to check again to help you further, but since Company Of Heroes no longer runs, that's not possible.

There are points specified on the map where you should build flaks to increase the chance of stopping the "invasion". However you won't be able to build them all. If you don't recruit soldiers, you will be able to do it, but rangers will eat you alive. The only thing you can do is create a half-assed defence xD.

Even if you don't recruit soldiers, after you "wake up" all the crew you will have even less population available. If you delay to "wake up" those soldiers or ignore the "flies", airborne guys will seriously mess the place, spamming mines, attacking neutral soldiers and grabbing weapons.

Play it for fun. Some users might say that Tiger Ace is the best campaign of ToV, but for me is Trun.

If you are playing it for the medal and don't want to cheat, i can give you an advice... what i did to win the medal without "cheating" (perhaps wasn't the best method but worked):

Save every three minutes XD... if something goes wrong, reload the saved game and you will know what is going to happen.

It's difficult because allies use arty, strafe and bombs runs as if were free but your tanks will survive... or not? xD.

Wish I had ToV :/ Or OF for that matter.

So best campaign (Because it's the only one I can play) is Normandy! :D

It also depends on difficulty setting. ;)

I usually play on hard but when I played this mission, I tried normal because on hard this is simply impossible, don't want to imagine expert..
(Talking about the medal here).

I combined all your suggestions to get the medal and it worked. place three 88s (first at the crossroad straight north of the middle bridge, second besides the western hedgerows and one more to the map entry point in the north (were it can face all directions)). Then I spammed mines to slow down the tanks and make them more vulnerable to my shrecks, finally I got two Pumas, one upgunned, to clear the scattered rest of them.

From now on the mission gets a lot easier.

Yeah, it took me so many attempts to get that medal on easy. :-[ I think it was the last 1 i got, actually. But then, of course, my pathetic computer decides to lose all my campaign progress. >:(

What I like in this mission is that you can recruit the retreating squads and vehicles by doubleclicking on them..

Also this mission has a certain atmosphere - I can't define it - it has a taste of end, but still you fight. Between all this hero crap in TOV it's the best thing IMO.

Yeah, i really love that feeling of fighting a lost cause. Delaying the inevitable defeat.

...At least until that bug where you have to blow the bridge, but if the bridge is already out, you can't destroy it, and you can't repair it either. I spent the whole fucking night trying to figure out how to repair that goddam bridge so i can destroy it! >:(

And what was your solution? Rage quitting the game? :P
I also blowed the bridge, but there was nothing like the error you described..  :-\

Yeah, eventually i did have to rage-quit. I'm really against that sort of thing, but since the enemy just wouldn't stop attacking, and it wasn't possible for me to win (or lose, since they wouldn't advance far enough), i had no choice.

I'm not exactly sure on the specifics, but i believe it's because the bridge got destroyed before it was meant to (i think i used a Goliath), so when the time comes to blow the bridge to trigger the next phase of the game, you can't. You can try it yourself if you like. (Assuming it hasn't been fixed in a patch.) (Dam patches... Ruin my fun...)

"SCAR code"? Where do you find that?

The SCAR file is the code for creating a Company of Heroes mission. Everything that happenes; the KI, weather changes, objectives and every scripted thing, is defined in the SCAR file of a mission. If you know a bit about programming, you can read the file and know which line in the code is responsible for what ingame.

Wow, that sounds fascinating. When i think of SCAR, i think of this:

Where do you learn about programming?

I only understand basic things that I learn at school in informatic lessons (if and for loops, integers, blablabla..)

I found a solution to this. It's something I got from a Youtube video. What you have to do is try to built tank traps on the locations where the tanks originally are. Try to built these where the tanks are, and they will move. Keep doing this until all 10 are across the river. Do this before you build your first Flak 36 (I call it 36, not 88 because that's what it is, a Flak 36). Obviously defeat the airborne. If they get Recoiless Rifles, don't worry. Just come before they take out a tank. Put your defenses where the report suggests after the airborne retreat. It will be easier cause you have more land to fall back on, and no more bombings and possibly killing your troops in the process.

Really? I though they were Flak 88s? Isn't that what they are called in-game? ???

I dunno. I only know the 88s... US 57? I think it's about making it's full name shorter. Flak36 cal 8,8 cm sounds a bit odd when trying to shout it: "James, there is this big ugly Flak36 cal. 8,8cm, let's take it out" while all german at guns were PakXX so they were called paks.

Why you lose all that stuff? Did you check the savegame folder?

No, i didn't see the point. My computer is barely hanging on by a thread really, so it doesn't surprise me when data goes missing.  But my Company Of Heroes saves don't matter now anyway, because whenever i try to launch the game my P.C. completely locks up, so i don't even bother trying to play it now. Not that it was a pleasant experience gaming before anyway, with the massive laaaaaag on minimum settings.
