Russian Unit Names

Hey, to the russians on this board, with what name would you appropriatly translate the following:

- (Assault) Engineers

- Conscripts

- Regulars (Strelkovy?)

- Guards

Gvardiya: guards

"(assault) engineers"?

We want a translation of both Assault Engineer and Engineer.

(Assault) Engineers - (Штурмовые) инженеры - (Sturmovie) Ingenery

- Conscripts - Призывники - Pryzyvniky (mean "Draftees" and it is sounded stupid on Russian, as I think)

- Regulars - Стрелки - Strelky mean Riflemen (original "Regulyarnie" is sounded VERY stupid on Russian)

- Guards - Гвардейцы or Гвардия - Gvardeytsy (Guardsmen) or Gvardiya (Guardia)

Thank you artemis. We are currently thinking about whether we should use russian names for our units. The problem is, while some names sound cool, others dont. Its also a question of recognition and association.

What is Russian for Sappers?

It is easy: Sapyory  ;D (Сапёры)

Well..look at the units already in CoH. Fallschirmjager...Relic could've put "parachute hunters" volksgrenadiers.  Relic put the just put Iron Cross holders in english. Maybe mix it up alittle? they CoH did.

Well relic uses a 'true' name only if it sounds 'cool'. Therefore,similarly, it may be prudent to use 'true names' when they can be easily pronounced and 'stick in the mind'

And true Russian names is written Cyrillic, not Latin. Latin alphabet isn’t good for Slavic languages. It doesn’t have ы, ь

I really like Ingenery too.

I like the idea of true russian name, although written in latin. But how about adding the english name in brackets ?

I think the idea of using some "true" names and some English ones is the best.
Use the catchy sounding Russian ones and have the more hard to pronounce ones in English.

If we add the english name in brackets, it ruins the reason we put them in 'Russian' in the first place. Most Axis names are anglicised German and nobody has problems remembering, so again, easy for the Russians.

On the other side of things, Russian can be quite hard to pronounce even when it's written in phonetic Roman text. Given you obviously don't speak Russian.

I mean, phonetically, Gvardeytsy would have to be Guv-ard-ee-tsee in order get people pronouncing it quickly without having them glance back and forth to make sure they've said it right. As you can see, in that form Russian doesn't look entirely sexy :P

Still, some 'light' Russian here and there wouldn't hurt.

u culd also use n00b russian, mix regular letters with the cryllik, like in borat, i belive he uses the letter P or R as an A. I mean u culd use russian letters that look like normal letters and put them in normal words...

Yeah, we did that with the Logo, I like to call it Rossgliski, its kind of like Franglais "Excuse me monsieur, Je voudrais a plate of pomme frites, please", but we just use a variation of Russian looking letters. :P

I'm not sure if the mix up of Roman and Cyrillic characters would show up ingame however.

And what are the plural/singular versions of both Strelky and Sapyory?

A sniper is снайпер (snayper) =) It sound most like on English.

Out of interest, what is the Russian localisation like? Do the characters sound Russian or Russian with American/British/German accents?

Characters speak Russian without accent, but with original style of CoH armies (Dogged British, Professional PE and etc.).

If you want to write on Russian in the game, (maybe) you need to have Russian font from a localized version.

The Narodnoe Opolcheniye is of the type known as "national troops" such as the Dnieper Cossacks, or German Landwehr, and although often translated as the "people's militia", "home guard", "people-in-arms", "national popular army", "civilian reserves", "popular levy", "People's Volunteer Army", "national guard...the factory regiments", "bataillons ouvriers", "all men fit to bear arms from their 21st year", like "British Local Defence Volunteers", "a hastily mustered militia, the opolchenie", "a reserve force", "Opolchenie (a kind of "Landsturm")", "home guard militia", "volunteer militia", "territorial army", or "temporary militias composed of mostly peasant 'volunteers'" its members never belonged to an organised military force, but were in all cases selectively accepted from a body of volunteers during a national emergency.

So, You can rename the Conscripts to Opolchenie and Regulars to Strelky.

About snipers
I think Sharpshooters must called as Sniper Team.

Is it possible to have different Russian accents for different units like for British?

Eg. T34 crew would have volgagrad or Moscow accent, while regulars would be Siberian (assuming they've been taken from Manchuria) and conscripts would be ukranian perhaps, while I'd imagine the guards being from the cities

hmmm well its hard to decide but when i played the blitzkreig mod for CoH i was really put off by the german names for [u]everything[u] i think more memorable names should be used. eg. King Tiger instead of Koingstiger or however it's spelt. words like panzer, mg42, volksgrenadier and geuschwagon are all good but using the german word for motorbike and mortar team would have been over the top. I think conscripts should be called conscripts but weapons like the ppsh should be called that... its hard to explain really...

Either way the fact that you are thinking about it gives me confidence that you will do the right thing  ;D
