My Holland battlefield tour
Hey fellow EF players.
Just finished a 2 day tour of the major battlefield and dropzones of the 1st British airborne in Holland. As well as some of the objectives of the American 82nd and 101st. But it was a British tour company so mainly the British areas.
Amazing tour, we visited the Grave bridge, the John Frost bridge in Arhnem, German, British and Canadian war cemetaries as well as several dropping zones and and memorials.
The best part however was the old veteren we had on board. He landed on Sword beach and fought in Hollan and in the Reichswald before being wounded in the knee and evacuated to England.
He had great stories. He told us one when we were standing on a hill near Heelsum, turns out he was part of the unit which seized the hill! He indicated where his unit crossed the river (lower Rhine) under morter and machine gun fire before storming the near vertical hill then densley wooded. At one point he and two mates were seperated and ran into a full German squad, which they ambushed killing them all. He remembers telling his mates to hold fire until they were in range as he had the only automatic weapon. A sten gun, the others had Enfields.
Amazing old fellow, anyway I thoroughly enjoyed this tour and would recommend it to anyone interested. I have the details right here!
