Dealing with Werh Sniper as Soviets

Hi,

I've had a good read through the forums and couldn't find a topic on this - please point me in the right direction if I've missed it.

I'm after some advice on how best to deal with a Werhmacht Sniper in the early game. The best I've managed so far is with the Soviet's own Sharpshooter team, however often the Spotter will fire first and spook the Sniper into running before the Sharpshooter can fire.

The Brits have the Bren and the US have the Jeep which are ideal, but the Soviets have no vehicles available until you can get the T70/90 out, by which time a Sniper can do a lot of damage.

Any suggestions?

I generally use the mortar for taking out Wehr Snipers, usually using a conscript sqaud to distract it.

The command squad is an effective sniper hunter. Use charge to rush at him and reveal him then gun him down. If he's good he'll retreat fast so you'll need to do it quite a few times to chip his health away. A supported sniper is best dealt with by using a mortar, since his sniper is actually a counter to yours, or using katyushas :). Remeber that the sniper is more vulnerable than other troops on the retreat so don't be afraid of chasing him as far as you possibly can until he's out of range.

The soviets have soooo much troops, I find it hard for 1 sniper to do much damage. (Unless you use my tatic)

The command squad rush and mortars are things I've tried, but perhaps I need to look at them again.

I often found against the AI that the Sniper would retreat right back to base as soon as I hit him, then pop up again somewhere else. If I continued to pursue, I'd run into the opponent's base defences.

The mortar never seemed accurate enough - before a shell could hit the Sniper, he'd already killed the covering infantry.

Its the same with every other sniper...they can be a pain in the butt.

Command squad detects quite nicely and at later stages the T70 can be a decent counter since it has a small detection radius

OK, had another go - I think I hadn't been agressive enough with my Command squad, needed to Charge then keep pressing.

This is a great Mod by the way, very well made.

Zerstorer (sorry for the lack of umlauts), yeah I know it's the same for every sniper, but the PE don't have one and I have counter-tactics for the Brits, Wehr and US. I never really play as PE so have to see how they work. Maybe in the future... I just couldn't work out how best to deal with them as Soviets.

Armoured cars and scout cars are death to snipers.

Yeah you have to keep pushing even after he retreats because snipers take more damage than other troops on the retreat. This is when they're most vulnerable.

I find that snipers don't take tank rounds very well either...

Command squad ain't so good when up against an observant human player who will keep his sniper on hold fire and then target the major in the squad first, removing the command squad abilties.

I suppose you can try sending in the meatshield to draw its fire and "persuade" the sniper to retreat and then setup your own sharpshooters in the area and wait for the sniper to return. Hide your snipers in green cover since the recloaking speed depends on where you fire from.

Killing the Major doesn't remove the detection capabilities of the squad.

Have to say that early in the game the best way to deal with sniper is the command squad, haven't yet gotten anything that works as well as the command squad.

Though whats annoying is when the sniper takes a Pop at your Commander, you have to go all back to reinforce.

I've targeted the major many times before with Hans.  He takes 2-3 sniper shots to kill.

That is exactly what I thought but people seem convinced it's one. The major has heroic armour and should be resistant to snipers. We need to bust this myth once and for all.

Ive played a regural vanila 1v1 COH game today. Semois map. I went riflespam with nades (no BARs), supply depod, T-17.  My enemy got vet 3 support teams (Snipers, MGs and Flame Pios) and Stormtroopers. Vet 3 snipers fire twice as fast...
I was undergunned with my Garands, still I managed to win.

My point is keep youre support teams behind a wall of Strelky/Command Squad, micro them and youll be fine.

Last time I see, Riflemen have 6 soldiers... that doesn't change anything, sniper counter infantry and weapons teams not the other way around.

Snipers don't counter 8 man squads with like 20ish reinforce cost per man very well.  I find buying Hans hard to justify vs Soviets and sometimes even against Americans.  Too many noob squad members to shoot at.

On the other hand, Vasili and Boogey Man are almost always a solid investment against Germans.  At 30-40ish manpower per man and squads with only 3-4 men, Germans are extremely weak against snipers.

Better to have lots of average normal equipped soldiers then small group of experienced soldiers, I guess.

in my experience, the Wehr sniper isn't a great investment against Russians, especially early game.

usually i counter wehr snipers by rushing the great conscript horde at them, in true Enemy at the Gates style, usually forcing the sniper to back up/retreat and possibly plinking off some of his health whilst at it. Russians don't have a hard counter to snipers simply because snipers just arent that effective against the Russian horde.

Besides that, I don't find snipers good against the Soviets unless they are going heavy Support Barracks or Ingenery Spam. One shot will take 16/17 manpower off the Russian Team in early game, round 22 if it's the command squad (lulz Imperial Guard in DoW) but it will need 20 shots to balance the resource war.


What I find, The Katusha, Sniper Ace/Partisan Infiltration, or Inspired Speech(the Break Through one which makes inf run faster) Are efficient sniper killers. Sure the Lend Lease Sherman too, but then the sniper would have support by then.

So far the weakest infantry against the sniper is the Ingenery, Conscripts have men, Command Squad have men AND power, and Sharpshooter team has the snipe. Course, the observer might shoot first, but I find the observer do lots of damage if his bullets hit. Also, use the ZiS Support Gun if you're worried about a tank rush. It won't automatically hit infantry, so you have to right click. I did that once, and it 1 shotted a full-health sniper (don't forget, that was luck). Put a strekly squad to reinforce it, or straynfyre (dunno spelling) troops.
