A newb to networking needs help!

Hey, I'm trying to forward my ports for COH standards so I can connect to players more easily, and I'm stuck halfway through. I went through a guide but once I set up a static IP it didn't really help and I couldn't connect to it by the web browser. Can anyone give me a step by step?  :( PLEASE?  :o

Re: A newb to networking needs help!

Networking isn't my strong subject... do you set up a new IP for your PC?

Remember that once you disable DHCP no one but you will provide a new IP to your PC. If you already know that, just pretend that didn't read this :P...

Cheers.

Well I used Portfoward.com but setting up a static IP didn't work, it just didn't work when I plugged it into my browser, so I need better help.

Re: A newb to networking needs help!

Correct me if I'm wrong, you already did:

a)Use @Jimbosmith' guide reference

b)Setting up the router to static address.

Do you set up/configure something on your own pc after that?

The normal port that causes issues is '6112'.

So we just have to make sure we don't have 6112

No, you need to open port 6112.

Jimbosmith's reference is where I was to get the instructions to change it.

b. Once setting up the Static address, that's it. I can't ACCESS what I need to change in my browser.

Which OS your pc has?

Are you sure you put an IP and DNS with the correct range?

Re: A newb to networking needs help!

You have to input your ROUTER's IP address into the browser, not the static IP you have set for your machine.

For instance, I've got my static IP for my computer set at [IP address redacted] and all my ports are forwarded to this address but my router's IP address is [IP address redacted].

The bolded number is the one I put in the browser to access the router page. You can find your router address by googling your model.

Also, please explain the exact steps you have performed thus far. To me it sounds like you have set up a static IP, but nothing else. Is that right? I could be completely wrong interpreting your problem. Are you able to access your router control panel before setting up the static IP?

A port forwarding topic should be stickied in this section.

Plugged in that information from Run/Cmd/ipconfig/all

Windows Vista Home Premium is what I have,

But the step proceeding that is where I was stuck.

But it was to MY knowledge that you put your static IP into the address bar. I'll plug in the router address and see what happens.

Probably, I'll give that a go too.

Re: A newb to networking needs help!

No, your static address is set only for your machine. You will use these to redirect port traffic to your machine. That's why the port forwarding is required, because some data packets are sent to some machines and some to others. If you tell the router to send all port traffic to your machine you will no longer have issues.

Re: A newb to networking needs help!

I can't find the router address for a WRT610N Linksys. Yay :(

Post Merge: [time]1282580298[/time]

*FacePalm* And I finally get the computer to connect to the router by the browser, and it wants a Username/password, the default is (Blank) and admin, and it won't accept that.

Re: A newb to networking needs help!

Try this:
[IP address redacted]

EDIT: Ah, I see. So using username/password as admin/admin doesn't work?

Also out of curiosity, what static IP did you set for your machine if you didn't know your router IP?

Re: A newb to networking needs help!

I found the router IP: [IP address redacted]

And the static was set to: [IP address redacted]

It won't accept Admin on EITHER computers, one wired directly and one on wireless. About to give up >.>

Re: A newb to networking needs help!

Well, I am supposing that the Wireless router is the direct internet access because we have a router that accesses the internet, and then THAT connects to the Linksys router. But everything ELSE connects to the linksys router, the other router is old and only has 1 connection that connects to a Cat 5 cable.

#44919

Re: A newb to networking needs help!

AH, that changes things.

I believe you have to connect your computer directly to the very first router. My friend has a similar setup with a router with a single outlet connected to a 2nd router. He has to plug directly into the router closest to the internet connection and configure through that. As a result, he's the only one who can access the internet when he plays CoH. However, you won't need to set up a static IP anyway since yours will be the only IP allocated.

Re: A newb to networking needs help!

I'm very unfamiliar with some networking components like such...I'll draw a map:

Ambit Router ??? (Thing is ancient, doesn't even have a marking of what model or type.)
--Connects to Linksys Router WRT610N
-Connects to Laptop
-Desktop Computer

Now...The External IP is [IP address redacted] (I suppose Ambit) but when I go to access the router it brings up WRT610N.

I can not crack the password, Admin will not work, and I tried Ambits passwords (Root) and it would not work. Is there an override?

Re: A newb to networking needs help!

I'm not sure. You sure you can't find out who set up your network? If not you could try to contact the manufacturer and they would be able to tell you quite easily.

External IP? So this is your WAN IP not your router LAN IP?

Also, your network map isn't exactly clear. Does it go:

Internet cable -- Ambit -- Lynksys -- Laptop
                                                \
                                                  Desktop

Is this because the Ambit only has the one ethernet port and no wireless function?

Have you tried basic passwords like 1111 or 1234 or 9999? These sometimes work.

Map is more clear in your picture.

I will try those passwords. But I don't think that Ambit manufacturing will be able to support me on something so old.

The ambit has 1 ethernet port and no wireless.

I can't crack the code it seems. More research to come.

Re: A newb to networking needs help!

Why not take out the ambit and run straight into the lynksys? A quick google of your router revealed that it is very noob unfriendly so don't feel bad about having difficulty. I'm sure I couldn't work it out either.

You can do a hard reset to factory conditions by holding down the power button for 30seconds. The default IP will be [IP address redacted] and the default username/password will be either *blank*/admin or admin/admin.

Re: A newb to networking needs help!

That happens to be a problem, the Ambit router is the only one out of the two that can connect to a hard line.

More detailed:

Hard line - Ambit -CAT 5- Lynksys -Wireless- Laptop
                                                \

                                                CAT 5
                                                    \
                                                    Desktop

Re: A newb to networking needs help!

I see...

If your hard reset doesn't work out for you I would honestly suggest getting a new router rather than have the double setup you have. My friend has an identical setup to you (different router types but same setup) and can't connect to people in CoH without playing directly through the router closest to the hardline, in your case the ambit. When he does this, no one else can access the net in his house and I still had to configure his port forwarding.

Re: A newb to networking needs help!

Very true...and the other problem is that the Ambit only has 1 CAT slot, and that goes to the Linksys...Without it, not only would the entire house lose the connection but our roommate who uses it. Bad bad bad. Looks like I'm stuck.
