heavy mortar range too large

Seriously, I set up an HQ that is in the middle of the map, yet a heavy mortar is able to bombard it literally across the map sitting inside of the base. Killed 43 of my guys before it moved out and I executed it,

Heavy Mortar is fine. It has much lower rate of fire compared to the others and a longer delay between shells landing and hitting things resulting in friendly fire. The only problematic scenario would be if it's sitting behind a hedge, but that depends on the map and can be dealt with by playing agressively and stealing it. Grenades, Granatbüchse, mortar or LeiG should deal with it. As long you don't let it vet up, it will probably do more friendly damage than damage to enemies lol.

Are you kidding me? You make it seem like it is that easy.
My main complaint is that the heavy mortar has a range as big as a brit howitzer w/o supercharge. In most maps it can literally be deployed right inside the enemy base and fire halfway across the map with ease. Shells are much more powerful than a regular mortar so a slower rate of fire doesn't balance that out. If ever it ends up moving out of the base, it typically is surrounded by hordes of infantry and maybe a few t90s that will wreck your infantry.

If the mortar is in the base, how are you supposed to get close enough to grenade it or rifle grenade it? LeiG is terrible at the moment since it can't fire consistently like other mortars, has weaker shells, and not much of an impressive range either in comparison. Regular ost mortar is also isn't a reliable counter either with weaker shells and range. Those things are more of a gamble than a real counter.

Right, I do agree that it's a bit too powerful on smaller maps. What do you suggest? Only a range decrease?

Re: heavy mortar range too large

Maybe we should go back to the old system.

Soviets start out with regular 82mm mortar. Then you upgrade and can produce 107mm mortar through an armory upgrade.

If I remember right the 107mm mortar is supposed to be sort of a non-doctrinal artillery type unit, and might come a bit too early

No. There was a reason for the removal of the 82mm -> 107mm upgrade, the discussion is somewhere in the internal balancing forums, I won't start another discussion on the public forums.

About this discussion: idk, Ostheer mortar is the same as Wehr mortar, has lower weapon scatter than the heavy mortar and a better, more accurate barrage. So, it's much better at counter mortaring than the heavy mortar is, especially since the heavy mortar needs a lot more time to pack up than other mortars. The ISG has the same range as the heavy mortar and a more accurate, faster barrage. So I don't think that the 107mm heavy mortar is that much better than axis artillery.

But yea, feel free to play some games and post the results. Also, I couldn't find you on steam because there were 2200 fegeleins over there when I searched.
