Company of Heroes: Eastern Front is a highly ambitious[1] video game mod for Relic Entertainment's Company of Heroes. It introduces the Soviet Red Army as a playable faction, with the German Ostheer (Eastern Army) set to be released next[2].

Eastern Front does not remove or replace any of the existing factions provided in the original release of Company of Heroes or its two expansions. These factions can still be chosen and played from within EF - the player simply now has an extra faction (the Soviet Red Army) to choose from, with the Ostheer Eastern Army to be released as the next faction.[3][4]

[edit] New Factions

[edit] Allies

Overview:

A new Allied faction is provided - the Soviet Red Army. This faction is designed and balanced to reflect many well known characteristics and units of the WW2 Red Army: e.g. numerous and cheap infantry; fast, agile tanks and extensive artillery support, to name a few.

The Soviet infantry is thus cheaper and more numerous than its Wehrmacht and Panzer Elite counterparts. Soviet tanks are faster than Axis ones, with faster turret traversal, but have poor accuracy due to the primitive optics and poor crew training. Soviet artillery options are extensive and varied - the Soviet Command Squad can call in two types of mortar barrages, fixed howitzer emplacements can be built, Katyusha rocket trucks can be called in (with the appropriate choice of Doctrine), as can off-map artillery.

Units:

Every single Soviet unit is a new and unique model.

The player can choose from a wide selection of Soviet tanks, such as the famous T-34/76 or the powerful IS-2.

Infantry Vehicles
Ingenery ZIS-2 Anti-Tank Gun
Command Squad ZIS-5 Medical Supply Truck
Conscripts T-70
Strelky T-90
Guards T-34/76
Sharpshooter Team T-34/85
PTRD Tank Hunter Team SU-85
M1938 Heavy Mortar SU-100
Partisans IS-2
Sniper Ace Katyusha rocket trucks
Mechanics KV-2 heavy tank
Lend-Lease Sherman
ISU-152

Doctrines:

[edit] Axis

Represented by the Ostheer, or the 'Wehrmacht in the East', they will represent the divisions of the Heer commissioned to fight in the east during World War II. TBA.

[edit] Key New Features

[edit] Game-Play

[edit] Retreat

The 'key' feature of Retreat, in which players can call back infantry to their HQ in an automated process, is not available to the Soviet side. This Feature is to be integrated in the near future.

[edit] Re-Crewing

While Soviet Infantry can Re-Crew light weapons, such as a LMG42, Panzershreck, or a Bazooka, can be captured and used as normal. However, heavy crew weapons such as the MG42 or PaK 38 AT Gun, can not be re-crewed due to hard-coded elements of the game. Similarly, weapons on the Soviet side, like the ZIS-2, can not be recaptured. To compensate, there are extra crew members for each heavy weapon.

[edit] Maps

A total of 21 new multi-player maps are included in the mod, ranging from 1v1 sizes up to massive 4v4 maps. The maps are all playable in both skirmish and online multi-player mode.

Each map is named and themed after a famous historical battle of the Eastern Front - e.g. 'Kursk' has open cornfields and rolling countryside, 'Stalingrad' contains many reference buildings to the actual historical battle, and 'Seelow' has a dominant ridge in the middle, mimicking the geographical formation that made the real Seelow Heights such a formidable defensive position. One of the most impressive maps is 'Berlin', which features the Reichstag Building itself as a centerpiece.

[edit] Reception

Company of Heroes: Eastern Front has received two awards from the video game modding website Mod DB. Relic Entertainment were 'very impressed with dedication it took to create a new faction'. Company of Heroes players mistook the mod for a genuine product from the original developers. [2].
